Water & Wastewater Treatment Vacuum

Water and wastewater plants use vacuum for vacuum filtration, dewatering and sludge systems. The air is humid and can carry spray and solids.

Liquid ring pumps handle this reliably: the water ring tolerates carryover, and the cast-iron machines run with low maintenance in the plant environment.

Typical connections include rotary vacuum filters, sludge receivers and vacuum-assisted dewatering equipment. The pump handles the air drawn through the filter together with water vapour and droplets, while a receiver or knock-out pot upstream prevents a sudden filtrate surge from reaching the inlet.

Cast iron is a practical choice for neutral water, but 304 or 316 stainless wetted parts may be required where chlorides, treatment chemicals or sewage gases create corrosion risk. Packing is easy to inspect and renew; mechanical seals are useful where leakage and housekeeping are more tightly controlled. A discharge separator is required to separate exhaust gas from seal water, and a closed loop can be fitted when the seal liquid must be recovered and cooled.

Selection should include the maximum air load, expected spray and solids carryover, and the lowest required suction pressure. Seal-water temperature and water quality affect capacity, scaling and long-term stability; strainers, flush points and an upstream solids trap should be accessible for cleaning. Check the cavitation margin at the warmest liquid condition rather than only at commissioning conditions.
