What it does inside the pump

A cone does the same job as a port plate — it carries the suction and discharge ports and sets the timing — but the porting surface is conical rather than flat. The advantage is that clearance is adjustable: moving the cone axially takes up wear, so a cone machine can often be restored to performance without replacing the porting part. Cone machines in our range are AT, ATTC, TC, CL and 2SK.

How it fails, and what you see first

The cone shell erodes at the discharge port edge and thins over the ring contact band. Once the cone can no longer be pulled up axially without contacting the impeller, or the shell has thinned enough to distort, it is replaced. Machines run on dirty seal liquid wash out the port edges first; machines run dry damage the cone and impeller together.

What to send us so the part is right

Model, serial, and the total axial adjustment still available on the cone (how much shim or take-up is left). Photograph the port openings and the sealing face. State the seal liquid and whether solids are carried over — that decides the material and whether a hard-faced cone is worth quoting.
