What it does inside the pump

The sleeve is a sacrificial ring that fits over the shaft under the packing or the seal. Its whole purpose is to be the part that wears, so that a grooved sleeve is a cheap replacement instead of a new shaft.

How it fails, and what you see first

Sleeves groove under packing, and the groove is what stops the gland from ever sealing again. Under a mechanical seal the sleeve corrodes at the elastomer contact line instead. A sleeve that is worn more than about 0.2 mm on diameter will not let new packing seat, and putting new packing on an old sleeve is the most common reason a gland leaks again within days of an overhaul.

What to send us so the part is right

Model, serial, inside diameter, outside diameter and length. Say whether it is a plain press-fit sleeve or is retained by a step and locknut. State the seal liquid: 304 and 316 cover most duties, ceramic-coated sleeves are worth it where packing is changed often or the liquid is abrasive.
