What it does inside the pump

The heads close both ends of the casing. On a flat-port machine the head carries the port plate and the suction and discharge connections; on a cone machine the cone is fitted into or forms part of the head. The head also carries the bearing housing, so it sets shaft alignment.

How it fails, and what you see first

The sealing face corrodes and pits, which shows up as a joint that will not stop weeping however much the bolts are pulled up. The bearing bore wears oval after a bearing has run hot or a seal has leaked into it, and that puts the impeller out of position axially. Cracks appear at the port webs on machines that have been run against a blocked discharge.

Model, serial, and which end (drive end or non-drive end). Photograph the sealing face and the bearing bore, and give the bearing number currently fitted. If the head has integral suction/discharge nozzles, give their size and orientation (top, side, or angled).
