Timing gears for Roots boosters

What it does inside the pump

The timing gears hold the two Roots rotors in phase so they can run without touching. Everything about the booster's clearance depends on them — they carry no useful load, only the job of keeping the rotors from meeting.

How it fails, and what you see first

Gears fail by tooth wear that shows up as backlash. Backlash is not a nuisance here, it is the whole margin: as it grows, the rotors get closer on one flank each revolution until they touch. The failure often presents as rotor damage, and the gears are then found to be the root cause. Gears also fail when the gearbox oil is not changed and the additive package is exhausted.

What to send us so the part is right

Booster model and serial, gear tooth count, module or DP, face width and bore. Say what backlash you measured and at what point in the rotation. Quote the rotors at the same time if they already show contact marks — replacing one without the other does not hold.
