Discharge silencers for liquid ring pump packages

What it does inside the pump

The silencer sits on the package discharge and attenuates the pulsation the pump puts into the line. On a liquid ring machine the discharge is a two-phase stream, so the silencer is always in contact with seal liquid as well as gas, which is why its internals corrode faster than the duct silencers used on dry machines.

How it fails, and what you see first

The absorbent or the perforated internals corrode and collapse, and the debris travels downstream. A collapsed silencer stops attenuating — the complaint arrives as noise — but the more expensive form of the same failure is internals that break up and restrict the discharge, which raises the pump's discharge pressure and loads the motor. Check the discharge pressure, not only the noise.

Say whether it is absorptive, reactive or combined, and whether it is mounted horizontally or vertically (drainage matters).
